Director: Ingmar Bergman
Cast: Harriet Andersson, Ingrid Thulin, Liv Ullmann
Two sisters visit a third, dying of cancer, though in reality they are more preoccupied by their own relationships and with memories of their past together.
Beautiful and moving, with all the excellences of Bergman and his team in the peak of their form, the film is both a culmination and a new beginning, emphasised by the advent of colour (even fades go to red, not black). The renowned portraits of women are particularly intense, with the presence of these three great actresses, but one increasingly wonders where lies the boundary between intuitive feminine psychology and the director's own hangups.
