A scholarly tax collector, not so much courageous as foolhardy, spends the night at a reputedly haunted temple and meets the ghost of a murdered girl, with whom he falls in love. She is, however, enslaved to a powerful wood spirit who uses her to ensnare passing swordsmen and suck out their yang essence.
Like Raimi's The Evil Dead, this has a blend of fantastic effects and violent comedy and is overall lighter in tone than The Bride with White Hair, say. The acting is decidedly hammy, but the effects are delivered with gusto and, typically of the Hong Kong stable, are absolutely unabashed at their own hyperbole.
