Director: Agnès Varda
Cast: Sandrine Bonnaire, Macha Méril, Stéphane Freiss
The story, pieced together from interviews with those who met her during the last weeks of her life, of a girl found frozen to death in a ditch in Provence.
There is sentiment here, though it is hard won and does not come from the uncompromisingly tough portayal by Bonnaire of a girl who has placed herself beyond reach. It both paints a political picture of France at the time, while allowing room for the existential aspects of the narrative to breathe at the expense of more mundane matters. Undeniably sharp but about a reel too long.
