Director: Andrew Lau, Alan Mak
Cast: Tony Leung, Andy Lau, Kelly Chen, Leon Lai
Inspector Lau, now exonerated by Internal Affairs, settles into his new role investigating an inspector thought to be in cahoots with the Chinese in an arms smuggling racket. However, he is haunted by thoughts and reminiscences of the dead Yan, and becomes obsessed with the attractive psychiatrist who loved him, so that in the end he becomes deluded that he is Yan and exposes himself!
This second sequel to the very successful, and imitable, Infernal Affairs winds up being too clever for its own good. All but the most initiated to the films' peculiar world of criminals, moles and police will quickly become lost in its labyrinth of flashback and subjective perception, not routinely seconded by switches to black and white. Flashes of style continue to please, but this is a conclusion to a series that most definitely does not know when to let go.
