Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Country: US/MOR
Technical: col/2.39:1 182m
Director: Zack Snyder
Cast: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Diane Lane, Holly Hunter, Laurence Fishburne
Synopsis:
Batman witnesses the destruction at the close of Man of Steel and seeks to undermine Superman's status as saviour of the world. Meanwhile the Department in charge of 'Superman affairs' arraigns him for interfering in a covert operation in Africa in order to save Lois Lane. Psychotic industrialist Lex Luthor exploits this febrile situation by appropriating Kryptonian technology.
Review:
This unhappy sequel introduces too many new characters (there's Wonder Woman, too) and in plot terms is too much of a mess to satisfy the average filmgoer. So many figures in masks and body armour, it is hard to tell what is going on, and Batman's motivation is inadequately justified by (still another) flashback to childhood trauma and an overwrought nightmare. The shorter two-and-a-half-hour version reduces the level of violence, which is not excessive in the context of a superhero movie. However, the present 'Ultimate Edition' is allegedly clearer on motivation, which, in the light of the above comment, still points to a flawed outcome, even if Snyder's 'play it straight' handling means the picture retains some integrity.
