The Boys in the Boat (2023)
Country: US
Technical: col/2.39:1 123m
Director: George Clooney
Cast: Joel Edgerton, Callum Turner, Peter Guinness, Jack Mulhern, Sam Strike
Synopsis:
In 1930s Washington State, a homeless Engineering undergrad applies to make the University rowing eight in order to fund his studies, and finds himself representing the US at the Berlin Olympics.
Review:
Clooney's worthy film has two well-tried handicaps to overcome: one, we already know the outcome of nearly every contest, and two, they have so much ground to cover, it has to be covered in some detail in order not to seem pat; which makes for a rather protracted and uninteresting narrative, with little space for characterisation beyond type. Nevertheless, it is an attractive and intermittently exciting film, with well-edited boat races, and at least a fascinating stroke oarsman in Mulhern.
