Carmen (1984)

£0.00

Country: IT/FR
Technical: col/scope 152m
Director: Francesco Rosi
Cast: Julia Migenes-Johnson, Placido Domingo, Ruggiero Raimondi

Synopsis:

A soldier in Spain falls for a gypsy girl who works at the cigar factory and herself loves the local torero.

Review:

The treatment brings a mingling of the director's naturalistic concerns with the formal conventions of opera: we have real locations but no blood at the end; we have a too old Domingo and Raimondi but an authentic peasant riding a donkey past the camera at one point right in front of the action. Effective in parts, then, and the lead is a winner.
