Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 108m
Director: Richard Brooks
Cast: Paul Newman, Burl Ives, Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Carson

Synopsis:

The family gathers at a southern plantation owner's birthday and during a stormy night a few home truths are voiced.

Review:

A stagey piece of material but one handled with class by the makers, who manage despite the bowdlerization to suggest Skipper's true leanings. Reprising his stage role, Ives towers over the film in acting terms; Taylor looks a million dollars, but her wheedling Southern accent grates somewhat, while Newman has some good snarling one-liners, not least 'Mendacity!' With so much of the latter flying around, it jars slightly that the film's punchline is itself based on a lie.
