Caught Stealing (2025)
Country: US
Technical: col 107m
Director: Darren Aronofsky
Cast: Austin Butler, Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Griffin Dunne, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber
Synopsis:
A baseball natural, all washed up since a car accident put an end to his baseballing days, keeps bar at a seedy New York establishment on the Lower East Side. When his flat neighbour, an eccentric Cockney with a Mohican, leaves his cat with him as a favour, he becomes entangled in the search for a cache of drug money by an array of interested parties.
Review:
Like a cross between Scorsese's After Hours and a Guy Ritchie movie, Aronofsky's dark walk on the East Side (so dark they must have forgotten to order any lights) is multi-accented and semi-intelligible. The pace improves in the second half but it is still a slog, a curious mix of Jewish humour, extreme violence and baseball. Trouble is, this director never really had a sense of humour.
