Country: US
Technical: col 87m
Director: Tom Holland
Cast: Catherine Hicks, Chris Sarandon, Brad Dourif, Alex Vincent
Synopsis:
A serial killer is cornered and dies in a toy store, but not before he has transferred his soul to the body of a talking doll.
Review:
Alas, United Artists, had it come to this? Astutely derived from the ventriloquist subgenre, an Amicus portmanteau tale entitled Mannequins of Horror, and the Omen films, this surprise cheapie did such good business that it spawned six sequels and acquired something of a cult following. In time-honoured fashion, the laughably premised foul-mouthed homicidal doll only gradually reveals its supernatural abilities, and the pacing is lively enough to sustain attention. However, the murders are so preposterously contrived as to render vain any assessment of it beyond that of tasteless horror comedy, but without the fresh indie amateurishness of Basket Case (1982).
