Corsage (2022)

£0.00

Country: ÖST/LUX/GER/FR
Technical: col/2.39:1 114m
Director: Marie Kreutzer
Cast: Vicky Krieps, Colin Morgan, Florian Teichtmeister, Alma Hasun

Synopsis:

Austria, 1878: the forty year-old Empress 'Sissi' frets over her weight, flouts matters of etiquette, dallies with her homosexual cousin and generally parades her independence of action.

Review:

A series of snapshots from a year, transitioning so suddenly that one is often left disoriented. There are moments of beauty and humour, such as the Empress lending herself to the device of moving pictures, but mostly a Sofia Coppola-style decorous vagueness in which the ever-present Miss Krieps keeps her thoughts, and hence those of her writer-director, very much to herself. Does she sleep with her horse trainer? Does she wish to annex Serbia? Is she in love with her lady in waiting? Why does she suddenly start eating? We don't really know, and the final shot is a slap in the face.
