Crossing (2024)

£0.00

Country: SV/DK/FR/TUR/GEO
Technical: col 106m
Director: Levan Akin
Cast: Mzia Arabuli, Lucas Kankava, Deniz Dumanli

Synopsis:

A Georgian woman journeys to Istanbul to locate her late sister's transgender daughter. She takes with her the alienated young half-brother of her sister's former neighbour, and together they find themselves welcomed by the city's transgender community.

Review:

As in Walter Salles' Central Station, an older woman has her attitudes changed by contact with a younger boy, but this is a film full of resonances from earlier films by Fatih Akin, Angelopoulos and others. It is a 'city film', full of chance encounters, casual generosity and common humanity, nor does it shrink from crueller realities, such as the Kafakaesque complexities of securing new ID for a transgender person. Framing and shallow focus, combined with abundant use of close-up, place the characters at the centre of the action, but it is the acting that carries the day.
