(I clowns)
![]()
Country: IT/FR/GER
Technical: col 92m
Director: Federico Fellini
Cast: Riccardo Billi, Gigi Reder, Tino Scotti (and other clowns), Anita Ekberg, Federico Fellini
Synopsis:
The film-maker looks back to his first acquaintance with the circus as a child, and in particular the impact of the at once frightening and anarchic clowns. As an adult he makes a documentary about them, interviewing some of the players, who then recreate some of their numbers.
Review:
This might try the patience of any but the most devoted Fellini fan or clown lover; others will consider that enough was said in La Strada on the subject. It has been called one of the first 'mockumentaries', but much of the master's oeuvre has that flavour about it. It might be more significant in having been shot for television and then released theatrically the day after its first airing, a practice that would become commonplace only in the next century.
