Turgid, quasi-mystical dialogue, long slow takes and rain, lots of rain; such are the elements of Tarr's cinema. The tipper-skipper from the end of Get Carter eternalises its baleful task as the humans beneath drink themselves into a stupor while expounding nihilist philosophy, and a stray dog drinks from the puddles. The image of life under the Soviets is indelibly caught: abandon all hope, ye who enter here.
