Dark Victory (1939)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 106m
Director: Edmund Goulding
Cast: Bette Davis, George Brent, Humphrey Bogart, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Ronald Reagan

Synopsis:

A horse trainer and socialite is stricken with a brain tumour that will take away her sight - before it kills her.

Review:

Classic Warner Brothers 'weepie', first in what would be a golden decade for Davis, when she would inscribe herself as queen of the 'women's picture'. It is all impeccably acted, except for Bogart's portable brogue, and Goulding directs with taste and restraint: Brent and Fitzgerald rein in their performances in deference to Davis's hyperactive roller coaster.
