Dark Waters (1956)

£0.00

(Siraa Fil-Mina)

Country: EGY
Technical: bw 120m
Director: Youssef Chahine
Cast: Omar Sharif, Faten Hamamah, Ahmed Ramzy, Tawfik El Deken, Ferdoos Mohammed

Synopsis:

A low-born merchant seaman returns home to Alexandria after a three-year absence, to be greeted with joy by his former co-workers, his mother, his far wealthier childhood friend, and the cousin he grew up with who has grown into a woman. However, his jealousy and lack of guile are exploited by a business opportunist seeking to overturn the status quo in the port for his own ends.

Review:

As in other Chahine stories (The Blazing Sun), ambition, conspiracy and treachery loom large, but the performances and action tend towards the melodramatic and there is not the same mastery of location.
