Days of Heaven (1978)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 95m
Director: Terrence Malick
Cast: Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepard

Synopsis:

A pair of lovers leave Chicago during the Depression to get employment on a Texas wheat farm, passing themselves off as brother and sister. The man, who is none too keen on hard work, persuades the girl to marry the owner, who has taken a shine to her and does not seem long for this world.

Review:

An immortal story not unlike that of Renoir's Toni, but one of those films which opts mainly for atmosphere, with beautiful music (Saint-Saëns), carefully lit images (Almendros) and a relaxed handling of the passing of time (i.e. slow pacing). The film has many points of affinity with Badlands - the scene in the woods is almost identical - and for a long while the two remained a diptych-like last word from this poetical director.
