Death Race 2000 (1975)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 79m
Director: Paul Bartel
Cast: David Carradine, Simone Griffeth, Sylvester Stallone, Mary Woronov

Synopsis:

The US President of the future keeps his populace sedated with a violent annual transcontinental auto race in which contestants accrue points for mowing down pedestrians.

Review:

Not in fact a forerunner of the video game Grand Theft Auto (though it gained some notoriety at the time) but a satire, albeit a heavy-handed one, on the Rollerball theme. It seems almost innocent now, with its gushing reporters, since Verhoeven mined a similar seam in the like of Starship Troopers. But it wins points for its naïve energy and low-budget appeal (all the scenery passed bears an uncanny resemblance to California).
