The Devil Is a Woman (1935)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 79m
Director: Josef Von Sternberg
Cast: Marlene Dietrich, Lionel Atwill, Cesar Romero

Synopsis:

In nineteenth century Spain, an older man warns his friend, a younger officer, against a beautiful temptress with whom the latter is on the point of becoming enmeshed.

Review:

Von Sternberg's Hispanic carnival fantasy might have been inspired by Mérimée's Carmen but is actually based on a novel by Pierre Louys. Even at this modest length it is dramatically hard work, and the weakest of the Dietrich collaborations, though as always there are compensations in the production design.
