The Eight Mountains (2022)
(Le otto montagne)
![]()
Country: IT/BEL/FR/GB
Technical: col/1.33:1 147m
Director: Felix van Groeningen, Charlotte Vandermeersch
Cast: Luca Marinelli, Alessandro Borghi, Elena Lietti, Filippo Timi, Lupo Barbiero, Cristiano Sassella
Synopsis:
A boy from the big city forms a friendship with one his own age from the mountains. They grow up separately, each estranged from their father, build a house together on the mountain, and one becomes a cheesemaker, the other a travel writer. But life is not the same for one who journeys from mountain to mountain, as for the one who stays.
Review:
Touching story of a lifelong friendship, based on a novel by Paolo Cognetti. One senses its leaps and omissions might be better served by that format (e.g. Pietro's writing success is very much a given, as is Bruno's failure) but on the other hand the alpine scenery, sharply caught in hard to fathom academy format, is a decided plus. It is long, but seldom drags, so appealing are the two young men in their straining after a dream that is dearly bought.
