Review:
Rank's contribution to the racial conscience cycle (Pool of London, Sapphire, The L-Shaped Room) was this hysterical but pretty frank melodrama set in London's East End over the course of a single day. To have De Banzie's prejudiced mother pretty much name the sex factor as the reason girls go with a black man seems bold indeed for the time, but the colour and cinemascope seem an irrelevance and the film ends awkwardly on a theatrically confrontational mise-en-scène across an empty stage.
