Forty Guns (1957)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw/Cinemascope 80m
Director: Samuel Fuller
Cast: Barbara Stanwyck, Barry Sullivan, Dean Jagger, Gene Barry

Synopsis:

Three brothers arrive in town, two guns for hire and one greenhorn, to find it under the thumb of a ruthless businesswoman and her retinue of outriders. The question soon arises whether she will tire of shielding her own no-good kid brother and come to terms with the newcomer.

Review:

Overwrought horse opera with musical interludes. Fuller enjoys a lavish production but sticks to black and white. It is a good choice, with Stanwyck's black costume and neo-gothic plantation style mansion. Wildly over the top at times, in tone and action, epitomised by the twister sequence halfway through, it anticipates Warlock in subject matter, another Fox western whose main street it bequeathes.
