The Five Obstructions (2003)

£0.00

(De Fem benspænd)

Country: DK/BEL/SW/FR/SV/FIN/GB/NOR
Technical: col/bw 93m
Director: Jørgen Leth, Lars von Trier
Cast: doc.

Synopsis:

Filmmaker Jørgen Leth's The Perfect Man is the subject of an extraordinary challenge by ardent fan Lars von Trier: in order to reveal himself from behind his objectivity in some kind of auteurist self-therapy, he must remake the film five times, each time constrained by a set of obstructions to be stipulated by von Trier.

Review:

To von Trier's secret delight but outward dissatisfaction, Leth transcends each of the obstructions to make an equally good movie, so the fifth becomes a simple reading of a letter of hero-worship from the former, read by the latter. The audience sits bemused, eager to see the original film in full so it can work out quite what von Trier is getting at. Fun for cinephiles.
