Germinal (1993)

£0.00

Country: FR/IT
Technical: col/scope 158m
Director: Claude Berri
Cast: Gérard Depardieu, Miou-Miou, Renaud, Jean Carmet

Synopsis:

Etienne Lantier arrives at the mine of Montsou in northern France, his head full of idealistic socialist principles. Seeing how the workforce is exploited by the management, he encourages them to go on strike, with catastrophic results for the community.

Review:

Given the length and detail of Zola's masterpiece, this is a pretty faithful adaptation by the newly anointed king of heritage cinema, ably abetted by his crown prince Depardieu and with sterling support from Miou-Miou and singer Renaud, who proves himself not half bad as an actor. All of which is as much as to say, don't come here for an evening's light entertainment, but a powerful piece of political cinema that wears its period-literary robes lightly.
