Hamnet (2025)

£0.00

Country: GB/US
Technical: col/1.78:1 125m
Director: Chloé Zhao
Cast: Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Joe Alwyn, Emily Watson

Synopsis:

A young Latin tutor is enamoured of a neighbour's daughter (born of a witch, as the gossip has it), sires three children, and then absents himself for long periods to found the Globe Theatre. Through silence, distance and bereavement they grow apart, but are transfigured by his masterpiece, Hamlet.

Review:

Based on a novel that cleverly appropriates a lacuna in the historical record surrounding William Shakespeare (and changes Anne's name to Agnes), Zhao's film offers painful rewards for those alive to the death of children. The theatrical payoff is a long time coming, and Mescal an underwhelming Bard, but Buckley cemented her status as perhaps the leading actress of her generation this side of the pond.
