Holy Smoke (1999)

£0.00

Country: US/AUS
Technical: col 115m
Director: Jane Campion
Cast: Kate Winslet, Harvey Keitel, Pam Grier

Synopsis:

An outback-dwelling Australian family employs a cult 'exiter' to cure their daughter of her conversion to an Indian guru's following; she meanwhile determines to thwart their objective by using her sexuality as a defensive weapon. Before long the exiter is completely converted...

Review:

Unconvincing character piece which asks us to believe that such a successful professional would be so easily bested by a petulant nymphet, unless he is no more than a charlatan. In which case the coda, which attempts to convey some kind of enduring love between them, is equally problematic. There are some breathtaking visuals to compensate.
