Holy Cow (2024)
(Vingt dieux)
Country: FR
Technical: col/2.39:1 92m
Director: Louise Courvoisier
Cast: Clément Faveau, Maïwene Barthelemy, Mathis Bernard
Synopsis:
An adolescent male in the Franche-Comté has to bring up his kid sister when his father is killed, leading him to break the cycle of destructive alcoholism and turn his energy towards creating an award-winning Comté cheese. However, his choices remain irresponsible and naïvely conceived, and it seems as if he will remain one of life's losers until he treats those around him with the respect they deserve.
Review:
Another slice of French regional miserabilism along the lines of Dumont's La vie de Jésus, this frustrating picture features some all too real non-professional actors playing characters who make the wrong decisions. Unfortunately realism does not extend to explaining the precise economic circumstances in which our anti-hero finds himself, taking something away from his achievement in overcoming them; nor does he develop a newfound respect for his father's craft in the manner of Loach's The Angel's Share, for example.
