The Hireling (1973)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col 108m
Director: Alan Bridges
Cast: Sarah Miles, Robert Shaw, Peter Egan

Synopsis:

In the aftermath of the Great War, a widow develops a relationship of trust with her driver, but confidence leads to attachment, and ultimately disillusionment.

Review:

L.P. Hartley's novel probes the still prevalent class divide after World War One, against a backdrop of nervous breakdown and readjustment. Bridges delivers a delicately nuanced portrait of a milieu he would make his own, Shaw particularly memorable in his role as caged lion. The French of course loved it: it shared the Palme d'Or with Scarecrow that year.
