I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 92m
Director: Mervyn LeRoy
Cast: Paul Muni, Glenda Farrell, Helen Vinson

Synopsis:

A de-mobbed soldier works in the construction industry until he falls upon hard times, is implicated in a robbery and ends up on a chain gang in the South. Escape, recapture and a life of crime gradually come to be the sole options for him.

Review:

A classic of the 'social conscience' wave of film-making that swept over Warners (particularly) in the Thirties. Way ahead of its time (and of the Hays Code) in its brutality, sexual frankness and lack of a sugar coating, it is a raw, committed piece of film-making that still has dramatic heft thanks to Muni's magnetic performance.
