In This World (2002)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col 88m
Director: Michael Winterbottom
Cast: Non-professional cast

Synopsis:

An Afghan boy who speaks English escorts his older cousin, who does not, overland from a Pakistan refugee camp to Europe. Only the boy makes it all the way to London.

Review:

An extraordinary mix of documentary and fiction - one is unsure to begin with which it is - the film focuses on the intricate network of contacts necessary for such a perilous and frequently undertaken journey, and the corresponding disproportion between the money laid out and the comfort and security of the journey, to put it mildly. It's a fascinating ride, at times beautiful and eye-opening, but it is unforgivably vague about what happens during the container ship crossing from Istanbul to Trieste that results in the fatalities.
