Jane Eyre (1996)

£0.00

Country: GB/IT/FR/US
Technical: col 113m
Director: Franco Zeffirelli
Cast: William Hurt, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Anna Paquin, Fiona Shaw

Synopsis:

Jane finds employment as governess at the house of a stern and reserved, but handsome, businessman with interests in the Caribbean. Gradually, she becomes aware that the house holds secrets concerning the deranged wife of her employer.

Review:

Oh, dear, where to start. Well, to begin with the casting is a mile off, both leads far too invested in the modern school of acting to convince, resulting in a sullen and far from dashing Rochester and a Jane equally out of her idiom. Then Zeffirelli, the great operatic stylist, lover of tableaux and the grand stroke of colour, finds himself somewhat constrained by this severe work, and Italian, so not the best dialogue coach for Hurt and Gainsbourg. Indeed, one need look no further than the number of countries involved in the production of this unnecessary picture to steer well away.
