King David (1985)

£0.00

Country: GB/US
Technical: col/scope 114m
Director: Bruce Beresford
Cast: Richard Gere, Alice Krige, Edward Woodward, Jean-Marc Barr

Synopsis:

David is anointed by Samuel while King Saul still lives, and the young king's unorthodox rise, though apparently willed by God, is succeeded by internal divisions, familial discord and marital infidelity.

Review:

An estimable attempt to do David's reign as history rather than biblical epic which extends to the presentation as much as the writing. Alas, the anachronistic casting sits uneasily with the realism of the production, and we are left with a few crumbs of original intent.
