Land and Freedom (1995)

£0.00

Country: GB/GER/SP
Technical: col 110m
Director: Ken Loach
Cast: Ian Hart, Rosana Pastor

Synopsis:

On the death of her grandfather, a committed Communist, a girl learns from his personal papers how he left Liverpool to fight in the Spanish Civil War with a militia on the Loyalist side. He is disillusioned by his experiences there.

Review:

More expensive-looking than most offerings from this director, a more or less balanced account of a classic instance of ideology succumbing to political expediency; though the militia in question is presented as a far more ideal fighting unit than many in fact were.
