Let Him Go (2020)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.39:1 113m
Director: Thomas Bezucha
Cast: Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Kayli Carter, Lesley Manville

Synopsis:

Montana, the 1950s: a retired lawman and his wife lose their son, and then their grandson when the daughter-in-law remarries into white trash. When the new family disappears without warning, the old folks set off in pursuit for North Dakota and a reckoning.

Review:

Diane Lane's hard-as-nails performance as the grandma anchors this film, which begins as a conventional mid-century drama before pulling out all the stops as a gothic western with Manville's matriarch serving her famous pork chops before chopping off Costner's fingers. Buried in there is a sweet little subtext about horse whispering and a subplot involving a Native American boy who has run away from Indian school. It's the kind of novel adaptation that comes packed with themes but somehow gets lost and ends with an over the top - 'You can go to hell!' - fire fight. That said, there's a lot worse on Netflix.
