The Last Wagon (1956)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 99m
Director: Delmer Daves
Cast: Richard Widmark, Felicia Farr, Tommy Rettig
Synopsis:
Survivors of an Apache attack entrust their lives to a scout due to be hanged for murder when it looks as though he is their only chance of pulling through the aftermath.
Review:
Gritty, physical western with Widmark perfectly cast as the Comanche raised orphan wanted for murder when his own family is massacred by racists ("Seems reasonable"). The film offers a discussion of the very different code that obtains in the wilderness, and the bigotry even of some of the settlers who profess to be Christian. The Arizona locations are beautifully filmed, but the final compromise of justice at the hands of the white man comes across as hopelessly utopian.
