Synopsis:
An ex-con returns to the scene of a crime he did not commit, and bides his time in the contemplation of vengeance. Meanwhile the inspector, who has married one of the witnesses, faces a dilemma of his own.
Review:
Dismissed as 'dreary melodrama' by Halliwell, this is another fine example of Rank emulating Ealing at its own game, as in Turn the Key Softly, for example. It has Gravesend locations, more than a whiff of Quai des Brumes in character and setting, a miscarriage of justice story that is oh, so tawdry and commonplace, but realistic, and characters that, with one exception, retain their humanity. What's more, Harry Waxman provides great camera work and William Alwyn lends a touch of folk to the musical backing. 'The right to exist without hurting anyone or being hurt', sticks in the memory.
