Maria (2024)

£0.00

Country: IT/GER/CHI/US
Technical: col 124m
Director: Pablo Larraín
Cast: Angelina Jolie, Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer

Synopsis:

The last week of Maria Callas's life: as reality alternates with drug-induced hallucination, the singer does battle with her memories and the fact that she will never perform again.

Review:

The Parisian appointments, 1970s recreations and stunning costume design are consistent with the director's previous entries in this unofficial trilogy of twentieth century media deities. It is a studied performance by Jolie, every bit the equal of Portman and Stewart's, though not an obvious choice for the Greek diva (a fact you instantly forget). Her life-meets-art rendering of Vissi d'arte in her apartment ranks with any operatic performance or pseudo-performance on film, and the scenes with the staff are beautifully played, too. It is just a pity that the script comes across at times like a collection of sound bites.
