Master of the House (1925)

£0.00

(Du Skal Aere din Hustru)

Country: DK
Technical: bw 107m
Director: Carl Dreyer
Cast: Johannes Meyer, Mathilde Nielsen, Astrid Holm

Synopsis:

A husband who mistreats his wife and children is taught a lesson by his old nanny.

Review:

Dreyer's 'comedy' is short on laughs but certainly has parallels with the blinkered fools of Molière, and all does indeed turn out well in the end. Mark Le Fanu refers to horror film elements, too, in the 'just deserts' motif common to so many tales of mystery and suspense, and the stony gaze of the new housekeeper, before which the merciless hero is soon a demoralised wreck. The director's mise-en-scène is stark but typically detailed.
