Mata Hari (1931)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 92m
Director: George Fitzmaurice
Cast: Greta Garbo, Ramon Novarro, Lionel Barrymore

Synopsis:

A fictionalized account of the career of World War One spy, Mata Hari, who used her talents as a dancer to seduce officers and part them from their secrets.

Review:

Garbo is again cast as a spy (cf. The Mysterious Lady), perhaps to compete with Dietrich in Paramount's Dishonored (also 1931). She appears in a number of dazzling MGM gowns and creations, indeed the term 'gown' gives a misleading impression of the amount of actual fabric involved (this was pre-Code, after all). Anyway, it is an engaging vehicle for her exotic charisma, and Novarro is a competent foil.
