Mildred Pierce (1945)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 113m
Director: Michael Curtiz
Cast: Joan Crawford, Jack Carson, Zachary Scott, Ann Blyth

Synopsis:

A woman divorces her husband and starts a restaurant business to help raise her daughter on her own. But this child's ingratitude is truly sharper than a serpent's tooth.

Review:

The apotheosis of the 'woman's picture', or the 'suffering in mink' genre as it is sometimes called, with Curtiz's streamlined direction guaranteeing a steady course past the emoting and through an eventful scenario, this has Crawford on sublime form as the wronged mother and lover. Production-wise it is also part film noir, with Ernest Haller's cinematography and Max Steiner's music adding layers of lushness.
