Chaplin's sentimental espousal of the lot of the common man here acquired a more political dimension that was considered decidedly unAmerican a decade later: fancy satirising the great production line economy! It concludes with such a classic image that you quickly forget how loosely connected and variably funny the preceding ninety minutes were, but then the star's early comedies were never strong on narrative unity and the real delight is the conception and balletic interpretation of his imaginative comic set pieces.
