The Magdalene Sisters (2002)

£0.00

Country: GB/EIRE
Technical: col 119m
Director: Peter Mullan
Cast: Geraldine McEwan, Anne-Marie Duff, Nora-Jane Noone, Dorothy Duffy

Synopsis:

The story of three (or four) girls who are held as inmates at one of the laundries operated by the Sisters of Mary Magdalene, for girls of easy virtue who shame their families and communities.

Review:

The necessarily limited scope of a film wisely prompted the makers to focus on a small number of varied cases - one rape victim, one mother out of wedlock, etc. - but the implications of this claustrophobic drama are staggering. The approach is consistently cinematic, from the opening shot to the last; though there are moments of strong acting, the weight of detail and the mise en scene do much of the work.
