The Monuments Men (2014)

£0.00

Country: US/GER
Technical: col/2.39:1 118m
Director: George Clooney
Cast: George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, John Goodman, Bob Balaban, Cate Blanchett, Hugh Bonneville, Dimitri Leonidas

Synopsis:

During the dying days of WW2, a team of art experts is cleared to go into Europe and rescue art treasures from the hands of the enemy, if possible returning them to their rightful owners.

Review:

Clooney's albeit unexceptionable film is mostly at such pains not to be Indiana Jones and the Art Crusade that it risks sacrificing excitement altogether. The ease with which the various hoards are discovered and inventoried, without for the most part any loss of life, is understandable for a film that seeks to remain truthful and of a reasonable length, but it leaves the screenplay straining for substance. Meanwhile there are injections of romance and humour and suspense, but surprisingly little space left to gasp at the art.
