A former revolutionary of the extreme left lives off grid in a trailer park in California with his teenage daughter. They are caught in the crosshairs once more when the former commander of an Immigration Detention Centre seeks to join a white supremacist organisation wishing to tie up loose ends.
Review:
Based on Thomas Pynchon's Vineland, which picks apart the radical sixties from the perspective of Reagan's second term, Anderson's film is an update set in an indeterminate present or near future, and incorporating some plot lines of his own. The themes of racism and freedom from state oppression are undercut by strains of wry humour, and the three principal male performers have a field day, particularly Penn. Whether it quite sustains its length is moot, but it builds to an impressive pitch with a pursuit along an undulating freeway.
