Country: US
Technical: bw 101m
Director: Raoul Walsh
Cast: Robert Mitchum, Teresa Wright, Judith Anderson, Dean Jagger, Harry Carey Jr.
Synopsis:
A traumatised child is raised by kinfolk in 1880s Arizona, and forms a bond with his stepsister, while the rest of the clan comes to revile him.
Review:
Superb gothic Western, with noirish overtones in its doomed lovers and high incidence of night scenes. The action, as in true film noir, resonates with past misdeeds and the issues of demobbed soldiers returning from the war, but the film is far more than a noir western, with shades of Wuthering Heights and a late-forties fascination with psychoanalysis. James Wong Howe's day-for-night cinematography and Walsh's muscular direction are breathtaking; rarely was landscape put to better use in a Western.
