Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 103m
Director: Marc Turtletaub
Cast: Kelly Macdonald, Irrfan Khan, David Denman, Austin Abrams, Bubba Weiler
Synopsis:
A put-upon mother of two discovers a passion for jigsaw puzzles, and begins an initially harmless liaison with an Indian man who invites her to enter a national competition as his partner.
Review:
Notable for its avoidance of facile soap operatics, this reflective film puts us inside the head of an anxious obsessive-compulsive woman who is used to looking after the three men in her life but finds relief from the doing of puzzles. It is less convincing in the characterisation of the devastatingly handsome inventor (Khan) who has given up his days to the same pursuit. Their relationship and the scenes of family life back home seem to belong in different films and the makers are unable to resolve them satisfactorily. Nevertheless, this is a gratifyingly tranquil entertainment that has one or two things to say about life, and Macdonald is magnificent.
