The Perfect Storm (2000)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: Technicolor/Panavision 130m
Director: Wolfgang Petersen
Cast: George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Diane Lane, William Fichtner

Synopsis:

New England swordfishermen in search of the season's last big catch venture far out to sea and are cut off by the meeting of a hurricane with other low pressure systems.

Review:

Somewhat reverently based on a true story, the two-dimensional characters and contrived situations never once leap off the screen. As in a disaster movie we are left to watch as these bickering, salt-of-the-earth types move inevitably towards their technical effects-laden appointment with fate; and the foregone conclusion of it all makes it of questionable taste. The final lionizing of the fishermen to provide an upbeat ending, courtesy of some folkloric eulogizing of the offshoreman's way of life, must be one of the most blatant endorsements ever of those classic American vices: greed and foolhardiness.
