The Queen of Spades (1949)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: bw 96m
Director: Thorold Dickinson
Cast: Anton Walbrook, Edith Evans, Ronald Howard

Synopsis:

A Russian countess sells her soul in return for the secret of winning at cards, but is murdered by an army officer who is then haunted by her spirit.

Review:

Brilliantly designed, atmospheric supernatural story after Pushkin, with a lot of talent in front of and behind the camera. It carries much of the uncanny power of Dickinson's other masterpiece, Gaslight, perhaps because it is taken so deadly seriously, and marked the return of Dame Edith to the screen.
