La religieuse (1966)

£0.00

Country: FR
Technical: Eastmancolor 135m
Director: Jacques Rivette
Cast: Anna Karina, Liselotte Pulver, Micheline Presle, Francisco Rabal

Synopsis:

A young woman who is a burden to her family is consigned to the cloister and endures a number of regimes, from sympathy to victimization, while fighting for her legal release but escapes only to finish up in a brothel.

Review:

Pretty faithful adaptation of Diderot's succès de scandale, managing to hit the same note somewhere between righteous polemic and piqued curiosity for the erotic ramifications of a nun's lot. The only modern touches are the percussive score and Karina's eye makeup, and the ending is rather sudden.
