Ruggles of Red Gap (1935)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 90m
Director: Leo McCarey
Cast: Charles Laughton, Mary Boland, Charles Ruggles, Zasu Pitts, Roland Young

Synopsis:

An English gentleman's gentleman changes employer consequent on a poker game and ends up out West, where he impresses with his manners, acumen and culinary expertise.

Review:

The culture clash comedy par excellence, this thrives on the contrast in acting styles and Laughton has a field day. McCarey's lightness of touch pays dividends in what might have been an unnecessarily raucous enterprise, and the action is kept varied, with the themes of identity, loyalty and honesty subtly deployed through Laughton's performance. (Confusingly, his new employer is played by an actor named Ruggles, and both are called Charles!)
